Flying ants and flying termites are two pests often mistaken for each other. Both sexually mature ants and termites, also known as "swarmers," have wings and are darker in color. So, when you see a swarm of flying pests gathering near your window, how can you tell which one you're dealing with?
By understanding the key differences between these two species, you can correctly identify the pest in your home and take the necessary steps to eliminate it.
Identification
Key Differences
Antennae
Ants have bent or elbow-shaped antennae, while termites have straight, bead-like antennae.
Wings
Ant wings are unequal in length, with the back pair shorter than the front pair. In contrast, termite wings are equal in length.
Waist
Ants have a narrow, pinched waist, whereas termites have a straight, broad waist.
Body
Ants have three distinct body segments: a head, thorax, and abdomen. Termites, on the other hand, have two distinct body segments: a head and a combined thorax/abdomen.
Summary
Now It's Your Turn
To identify your pest, catch or kill one using a window glue trap or an electronic bug zapper. Then, examine its antennae, wings, waist, and body segments closely. If you’re having a hard time identifying the insect, take a clear picture with your phone and zoom in, or use a magnifying glass for a closer look.
If it’s a termite, we recommend hiring a professional exterminator immediately.
